History of the Museum

The idea for the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art began in 2014. That year, William R. Harvey and his family gave $1.3 million to Talladega College. This generous gift helped to create the art museum, which was named in his honor.

Building the Museum

Work on the museum building started in November 2017. The State of Alabama also helped with the project. The state, led by Governor Kay Ivey, donated $1.5 million to help with the construction costs. This support helped make the museum a reality.

Grand Opening

The Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art officially opened its doors on February 3, 2020. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate. Both William R. Harvey and Billy C. Hawkins, who was the president of Talladega College at the time, were there for this important event.

Museum Design and Size

The museum building is quite large, covering an area of 9,730 square feet. This space allows for many different artworks to be displayed.

Art Collections

The main collection at the museum features the Amistad Mutiny murals. These important artworks were painted by Hale Woodruff. The murals tell a powerful story through art.
