The Dr. York Bailey House, also known as the Sara Rhodan House, is a special historic home. It is located on Saint Helena Island near Frogmore, in Beaufort County, South Carolina. This house was built around 1915. It is a two-story home built in the American Foursquare style.
This house was the home of Dr. York W. Bailey (1881-1971). He was a very important person from Saint Helena Island. Dr. Bailey was the first African-American doctor on the island. He was also the only doctor living there for more than 50 years. He lived in this house until he passed away in 1971. Today, the York W. Bailey Cultural Center and Museum at Penn Community Center is named after him.
About Dr. York Bailey
Dr. York W. Bailey was born on Saint Helena Island in 1881. He grew up there and later left to study medicine. After finishing his studies, he chose to return home. He wanted to help the people in his community.
He became the first African-American doctor on the island. For over five decades, he was the only doctor living there. This meant he was very important to the health and well-being of the island's residents. He cared for many families over the years.
