Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Comedy-drama, also known as dramedy, is a type of television show or movie that mixes both funny and serious parts. It's like a story that makes you laugh and also makes you think or feel strong emotions.

History

Theatre beginnings

For a long time, plays in theatre were either clearly funny (a comedy) or very serious and sad (a tragedy). But over time, some writers, like Anton Chekhov and George Bernard Shaw, started to blend these two styles. Their plays might have funny moments even in serious situations, or serious parts in a generally light story. This made the line between comedy and drama less clear.

Early television shows

Even though theatre started mixing comedy and drama, early mass media like television kept them very separate. TV shows were either half-hour "comedies," which were supposed to be only funny, or hour-long "dramas," which were meant to be serious.

In the early 1960s, TV had half-hour shows that were mostly sitcoms or family comedies. Hour-long shows were usually dramas, like detective stories, westerns, or science fiction.

Drama-comedy on television today

Today, a drama-comedy is often an hour-long show that has a main dramatic story but also includes lots of funny jokes and situations. These shows often explore real-life problems and feelings, but they use humor to make them more enjoyable and relatable.

Some popular examples of drama-comedy shows include Moonlighting, Northern Exposure, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, House, Desperate Housewives, Gilmore Girls, Ally McBeal, and Grey's Anatomy. These shows show how life can be both serious and funny at the same time.
