Drimys granadensis is a special kind of tree. It's an evergreen tree, which means it stays green all year round! It belongs to the Winteraceae family. You can find it growing naturally in warm, high-up forests, from Peru all the way north to southern Mexico.

In Mexico, people call this tree by many names. Some of these names are al-ca-puc, cashiquec, chachaca, and chilillo. Other names include palo picante, palo de chile, yaga-bziga, and vaya-yiña.

What Does Drimys granadensis Look Like?

Drimys granadensis can be a large shrub or a small tree. It can grow up to 12 meters (about 39 feet) tall! This tree is evergreen, so its leaves stay green all year. It also has beautiful large white flowers.

Where Does Drimys granadensis Grow?

This amazing tree grows in many places. Its natural home stretches from Peru, through countries like Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela. It also grows across Central America and into southern Mexico.

You'll often find Drimys granadensis in specific types of forests. It loves the wet, misty cloud forests high up in the mountains. These include the Northern Andes, the Central American Cordillera, and the mountains of southern Mexico. In southern Mexico, it also grows near rivers and in wet valleys. It can be found in humid oak forests and pine–oak forests. These trees grow at high elevations, from about 1,100 to 3,300 meters (3,600 to 10,800 feet) above sea level.

Different Types of Drimys granadensis

Scientists have found five different types, or varieties, of Drimys granadensis. Each variety grows in slightly different places:

  • Drimys granadensis var. chiriquiensis – This type is found in Panama.
  • Drimys granadensis var. granadensis – This is the main type, found in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and northwest Venezuela.
  • Drimys granadensis var. mexicana – This type grows in Mexico (in states like Veracruz, Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas). It's also found in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.
  • Drimys granadensis var. peruviana – This variety is found only in Peru.
  • Drimys granadensis var. uniflora – This type grows in northwest Venezuela.
