Who Was Sir Drugo Barentyn?
Sir Drugo Barentyn came from a family with roots in Normandy, France. His ancestors were powerful lords in a place called Le Rozel before they moved to England. Drugo was born a couple of generations after his family settled in England.
His Start in London Politics
In 1393, Drugo Barentyn became one of the Sheriffs of London. He worked alongside another famous person, Richard Whittington. Sheriffs were important officials who helped keep law and order in the city.
Becoming Lord Mayor of London
Drugo Barentyn was elected Lord Mayor of London two times.

- His second term was in 1408.
A Time of Big Change
His first time as Mayor happened during a very exciting period in English history. This was when King Richard II lost his throne. King Henry IV took over as the new king.
At the start of his term, Mayor Barentyn had to make a promise for the city. This promise was to support the banishment of Henry Bolingbroke (who later became King Henry IV). But later, when King Richard II was removed from power, Mayor Barentyn was trusted with a secret mission. He had to quietly move the former King Richard II to the Tower of London.
Barentyn the Successful Businessman
Besides his political roles, Drugo Barentyn was a very successful goldsmith and merchant.
Court Jeweler
He was so skilled that he became the official court jeweler. He held this important position for both King Richard II and King Henry IV. This meant he created beautiful jewelry for the royal family.
A Fight Against Pirates
In 1400, something interesting happened. Drugo Barentyn received a special document called a letter of marque. This allowed him to get revenge for a lost shipment of French wine. Pirates had stolen his cargo!
Helping the Goldsmiths' Company
Drugo Barentyn lived close to Goldsmiths' Hall, which is the main building for goldsmiths in London. He even helped rebuild it in 1407. In 1415, he generously gave "faire lands" (valuable property) to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. This was a guild or group for goldsmiths.
His Final Years
Sir Drugo Barentyn passed away in 1415. He was buried in the church of St John Zachary in London.
