The Drummine Farm is a very old and special farm located in New Market, Frederick County, Maryland. It's a historic place because of its main house and many other farm buildings that show how farms used to look and work a long time ago.

What is Drummine Farm?

Drummine Farm is a historic property with a main house and several other buildings. It covers about 10 acres (4.0 ha) of land. The farm gives us a peek into the past, showing what life was like in Maryland centuries ago.

The Main House

The main house at Drummine Farm was built around 1790. That's over 230 years ago! It is a two-and-a-half-story building made from fieldstone. Fieldstone means it was built using natural stones found in the area.

The house still has many design features from the Georgian style. This was a popular building style when the house was first built. You can see these old-fashioned details both inside and outside the house.

Other Farm Buildings

Besides the main house, Drummine Farm has many other old buildings. These buildings helped the farm run smoothly in the past. They are made from different materials, like stone and wood.

Stone Buildings

Several buildings on the farm are also made of stone.

  • One is a stone tenant house, which was built in 1816. A tenant house was where farm workers or renters lived.
  • There's also a smokehouse, which was used to preserve meat.
  • A water storage house helped keep water for the farm.
  • A garden outhouse was a small building for outdoor toilets.
  • There is also a large bank barn. A bank barn is built into the side of a hill, so you can enter different levels from the ground. These stone buildings are from the early 1800s.

Wooden Buildings

The farm also has several wooden buildings.

  • A calf shed and a wagon shed with corn cribs were built in the late 1800s. A corn crib was used to store corn.
  • A dairy barn with three tall cement silos was added in the 1930s. Silos are used to store animal feed.
  • There are also several other sheds and garages.
  • A large pole barn is also part of the complex. A pole barn is a simple building made with poles set in the ground.

Why is Drummine Farm Important?

Drummine Farm is considered very important because it shows how farms were built and used in the past. Because of its historical value, Drummine Farm was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it is a special place that is protected and recognized for its history in the United States.
