The DuPont Building is a very tall and important building in Wilmington, Delaware, in the United States. It takes up an entire city block! This building was one of the first "high-rises" (tall buildings) ever built in Wilmington. It also looks out over a famous park called Rodney Square.

The building was built in different stages over several years. It started in 1908 as the main office for the DuPont company. Over time, new parts were added, making it bigger and taller.

History of the DuPont Building

The DuPont Building was not built all at once. It grew over time, like a puzzle.

Early Construction (1908-1913)

The first part of the building was finished in 1908. It faced Rodney Square and was the main office for the DuPont company. Just five years later, in 1913, the building got much bigger. New sections were added along 10th and 11th streets, making the building shaped like a "U". During this time, the famous DuPont Playhouse theater was also added. A part of the original building was even turned into the fancy Hotel duPont.

Final Additions (1923)

The last big change to the building happened in 1923. Another section was added along Orange Street. Two more floors were also built on top, making the building 13 stories tall. It reached a height of 124 feet (38 m), which is about as tall as a 12-story building!

What's Inside Today?

For many years, until 2015, the DuPont Building was the main office for the DuPont company. But things changed.

In 2014, DuPont decided to move its main office to another location nearby. A new company called The Chemours Company, which used to be part of DuPont, moved into the DuPont Building instead.

Today, the DuPont Building is home to several different businesses:

  • The Chemours Company: This is a large chemical company that now has its offices here.
  • The Playhouse on Rodney Square: This famous theater (formerly the DuPont Playhouse) is still a popular place to see shows. It is now managed by the Grand Opera House.
  • The Hotel duPont: This historic hotel is still open and welcomes guests.
  • M&T Bank: There is also a bank branch inside the building.

In 2018, a company called Buccini/Pollin Group bought the entire building and the hotel business. They have promised to keep the hotel running and continue to lease office space to Chemours and the theater to The Grand Opera House.
