Meet the Dumbletonius Moth

These moths have different sizes depending on if they are male or female.

  • Male moths have a wingspan (the distance from one wingtip to the other) of about 56 to 70 millimeters.
  • Female moths are a bit bigger, with a wingspan of about 72 to 95 millimeters.

What Does It Look Like?

The front wings of the Dumbletonius characterifer have a cool, detailed pattern. This pattern looks a bit like eyes and is made of scales that have two different colors. The back wings of the moth are a dark brown color.

When Can You See Them?

Adult Dumbletonius characterifer moths are usually flying around from November to April.

Where Do They Live?

You can find this moth in many parts of New Zealand. It lives in regions like Waikato, Taupo, Taranaki, Wairarapa, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Marlborough Sounds, Buller, and Westland.

What Do They Eat?

The young moths, called larvae, like to eat leaf litter. This is the layer of dead leaves and other plant material found on the ground.
