History of Dumbreck Football Club
Dumbreck Football Club started in 1872. It grew out of the Dumbreck Cricket Club. This club was one of the first eight teams to create the Scottish Football Association (SFA). The SFA helps organize football in Scotland.
Early Matches and Famous Firsts
Dumbreck played some of its first games against the Clydesdale club in early 1873.
On October 25, 1873, Dumbreck played against Queen's Park. This match was special because it was the first game ever played at the first Hampden Park. This stadium became very famous in Scottish football. It was also the first time Queen's Park wore their well-known black and white striped jerseys.
Scottish Cup Journeys
Dumbreck took part in the Scottish Cup tournaments from 1873–74 to 1877–78. Their best performance was in the 1875–76 season. They made it to the quarter-finals, which meant they were one of the last seven teams left.
In that quarter-final, they played against the very strong Queen's Park team. Dumbreck lost the game 2–0. After the match, Dumbreck's team complained about one of Queen's Park's goals.
Goalkeeper Innovation
Dumbreck's goalkeeper, Alex M'Geoch, was known for something new. He was one of the first to "drop-kick" the ball. This meant he would drop the ball and kick it as it bounced. At the time, most goalkeepers kicked the ball from a standstill. Drop-kicking was thought to send the ball much further.
The Club's End
Dumbreck was an active club for a few years. In 1876, they had 75 members, which was similar to Rangers at the time. They were also involved in the Scottish FA committees until 1877.
However, the club stopped playing before the 1877–78 season. They pulled out of the Scottish Cup instead of playing against the new Shawfield club. It seems they decided not to play any more matches.
Team Colours
Dumbreck Football Club wore blue shirts. Their shorts were white. For their socks, they wore scarlet (bright red) in 1873. In 1874, they changed to black and white socks.
Famous Players
- Alex M'Geoch (also spelled McGeoch) was a notable player for Dumbreck. He was a goalkeeper and played for the Scotland national team four times.
