Lieutenant Colonel Duncan Maclachlan Carter-Campbell of Possil was a British Army officer. He was born on December 5, 1911, in Malta. His father was Major-General George Tupper Campbell Carter-Campbell. Duncan Carter-Campbell served as a Colonel in the 1950s and was awarded the OBE. He passed away in January 1990.

Military Career of Duncan Carter-Campbell

Early Life and Training

Duncan Carter-Campbell was born in Malta. He went to Malvern College in Worcestershire, England. After that, he joined the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, in 1930. This is where future army officers are trained. In 1932, he officially became an officer in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) regiment.

World War II Service

Before World War II, Duncan served with his regiment in India from 1937 to 1938. As the war began, he was promoted to captain in 1940. He became a major in 1941.

In July 1943, he became the second-in-command of the 12th Battalion. Later, he joined the 1st Battalion in Italy. He fought in important battles like Anzio and Monte Cassino. On August 14, 1944, he was promoted to lead the 1st Battalion. He then fought in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1945.

Post-War Roles

After World War II, Duncan worked as a Staff Officer. He was sent to the British Middle East Land Forces. His job was to help with operations in Palestine and Transjordan from 1945 to 1947.

From 1947 to 1948, he served with the British Army of the Rhine in occupied Germany. In 1952, he took command of the Cameronians 1st Battalion again. He was recognized for his service in Malaysia in October 1952. He also served in Bahrain and the Trucial Oman.

In 1958, he became the Secretary to the top commander of the Scottish Army. He also became the Governor of Edinburgh Castle. This commander was Lieutenant-General Sir George Collingwood. Before he retired in 1962, Duncan was the Director of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Family and Later Life

Duncan Carter-Campbell was married to Margaret Elliot Davidson. They had five children together. He passed away in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in January 1990. He, his wife, and two of their children are buried at Kirkpatrick Irongray Church.
