A Glimpse into Dundee's Past
Dundee has an interesting history, even though it's a small place. For a short time, it was an officially recognized town.
How Dundee Became a Town (and Then Wasn't)
In February 1899, the Alabama Legislature passed a special document called a "charter" for Dundee. The Alabama Legislature is the group of people who make laws for the state of Alabama. This charter officially made Dundee an incorporated town. This meant it could have its own local government.
Before it became an official town, Dundee had a post office. This post office served the community from 1880 until 1904. However, Dundee's time as an incorporated town was short. Sometime in the early 1900s, it was "disincorporated." This means it lost its official town status and went back to being an unincorporated community.
