Durham is a small place in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a settlement that doesn't have its own local government. Instead, it's managed by the larger county. Durham is about 6 miles (10 km) west of a town called La Harpe.
Discovering Durham's Past
Durham was first planned out in the year 1839. Many of the first people who settled here came from a place called Durham, Connecticut. Because of this, they decided to name their new home "Durham" too!
When Durham Had a Post Office
A post office was opened in Durham in 1850. This was a very important place for people to send and receive letters. The post office served the community for many years. It finally closed its doors in 1905.
