Durio kutejensis, also known as durian pulu, durian merah, nyekak, Pakan, Kuluk, or lai, is a special fruit tree. It grows in the rainforests of Borneo. This tree is found under the main forest canopy, in a layer called the substorey. It gives us a delicious fruit called durian.
About the Durian Pulu Tree
This tree is quite beautiful. It can grow up to 30 meters (about 100 feet) tall. It has big, shiny leaves. The tree also produces many large, red flowers.
These flowers have a strong smell. It's a bit like rotting meat, which helps attract certain animals. This smell is strongest when the flowers are fully open, a time called anthesis.
Animals like giant honey bees, birds, and even bats help the flowers make seeds. They do this by moving pollen from one flower to another. This process is called pollination.
The fruit from this tree is a large durian. It has thick, yellow flesh inside. The taste is mild and sweet. Its texture is creamy, much like the common durian, Durio zibethinus. This tree usually produces its fruit later in the fruit season.
Where It's Used
People grow Durio kutejensis in East Kalimantan, a part of Indonesia. It has also been brought to Queensland, Australia.
In Brunei, many local people actually prefer the fruit of D. kutejensis. They like it more than the common durian, D. zibethinus. Even though D. zibethinus is the only durian sold all over the world, D. kutejensis is special. People say its fruit has fewer of the strong, sometimes unpleasant, flavors that D. zibethinus can have.
