They are known for their reddish-brown or golden-yellow color. These pigs are usually large and muscular, with ears that hang down a bit. Duroc pigs are also known for being one of the calmest pig breeds raised for meat.

Discovering the Duroc Pig's History
The Duroc pig breed has a long and interesting past. It is one of several red pig types that appeared around the 1800s in New England, a region in the United States.
Where Did Duroc Pigs Come From?
There are a few ideas about how these red pigs first arrived.
- One idea is that they were brought from the Guinea coast of Africa. This happened during the time of the slave trade.
- Another idea suggests their red color came from the Berkshire pig breed from Britain. Berkshire pigs are black now, but they used to be a rusty brown color.
- Some people also think that four young pigs from Spain and Portugal influenced the breed. These pigs were imported around 1837. However, it is not fully clear if they became part of the Duroc family tree.
How the Duroc Breed Got Its Name
The name "Duroc" might have come from a famous horse. Some say the breed was named after a stallion owned by Harry Kelsey in New York state in the 1820s. Others believe the horse was named after General Christoph Duroc, who was an aide to Napoleon.
The Modern Duroc Pig
The Duroc pig we know today came about around 1850. It was created by mixing two older pig types: the Jersey Red and the original Duroc from New York. Duroc pigs started appearing in livestock shows around the 1950s. Farmers mainly raise Durocs for their meat. People like them because they are tough and grow muscles quickly and well.
The First Pig to Have Its DNA Mapped
Did you know that the very first pig to have its entire DNA mapped was a female Duroc? Her name was T.J. Tabasco! This was a big step in understanding pig genetics.
What Makes a Duroc Pig Special?
Duroc pigs have several unique features that make them stand out.
Size and Appearance
In the past, Duroc pigs were very large, though not as big as the Jersey Red breed. Today, they are considered a medium-sized pig breed. They have a body that is moderately long. Their face is slightly dished, meaning it curves inward a little. Their ears hang down and are not held upright.
Color Variations
The color of a Duroc pig is often an orangish-brown. However, their color can range quite a bit. You might see them in a light-golden shade or a deep mahogany-red.
Weight of Adult Durocs
A fully grown male Duroc pig, called a boar, can weigh about 882 pounds (400 kilograms). A fully grown female Duroc pig, called a sow, weighs around 772 pounds (350 kilograms).
