A Look Back at Duster's History

How Duster Got Its Name

The community of Duster was first settled in the early 1880s. That's over 140 years ago! The name "Duster" has a fun story behind it. When the first settlers met to decide on a name for their new post office, a man picked up a piece of paper. He blew the dust off it, and someone suggested "Duster" as the name. Everyone liked it, and so the community got its unique name!

The Moving Post Office

A post office was officially opened in Duster in 1891. Its first location was near a spot called Polecat Pond. Later, the post office moved about two miles north. This happened when the Texas Central Railroad built its tracks through the area. A woman named Belle Dukes was the very first postmaster, helping people send and receive mail.

The post office stayed open until 1927. When the railroad eventually closed down, the post office moved back to its original location.

Population Changes Over Time

In 1940, Duster had a population of 50 people. By the year 2000, this number had become half, with only 25 residents.

Where is Duster Located?

Duster is found in the north-central part of Comanche County, Texas. It's located right where two roads meet: Farm to Market Road 587 and Farm to Market Road 679. These are special roads in Texas that connect farms and rural areas to markets and towns. Duster is about 24 miles (39 km) northwest of the larger town of Comanche.
