Duvall (pronounced doo-VAHL) is a small, unincorporated community located in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. It's not a city or a village with its own government. Instead, it's part of the larger town of Red River. You can find Duvall where County Highways X and AB meet. It's about 8 miles north of the village of Luxemburg.
History of Duvall
Duvall has an interesting past that dates back to the mid-1800s. Like many small communities, its story is tied to the people who settled there and the important buildings they created.
Early Days and the First Name
The community's beginnings are linked to the founding of St. Frances DePaul Church. This church was established in 1858. A piece of land for the church was officially given in 1860 by a person named Louis Marchant. In the very early days, before a proper church building was constructed, religious services were held in the Marchant family's home. Because of this, the area was first known as "Marchant."
How Duvall Got Its Name
The name "Duvall" became official much later, in 1890. This happened when a post office was set up in the community. The post office was named after Joseph Duvall. He was a well-known businessman from nearby Kewaunee. Joseph Duvall was also known for being a helpful person in the community. He even served as the postmaster for a time. That's how the small community of Marchant became known as Duvall.
