Dwan Hurt (born March 29, 1963 – died November 25, 2016) was a talented American basketball coach and player. He played college basketball for the Gonzaga Bulldogs team. Later, he became a very successful coach at Junipero Serra High School for 27 years.
Playing College Basketball
After finishing high school in 1981, Dwan Hurt attended El Camino College for two years. In 1984, he joined the Gonzaga team. He quickly became a starting player during his first season.
In one exciting game in February 1985, he scored a basket right as the buzzer sounded. This amazing shot helped Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount 51-49. During that season, he played in 25 games and started in 15 of them. He averaged about 4.8 points and 3.3 assists per game.
As a senior, Hurt continued to be a key player. He started in 25 out of 28 games for his team.
Becoming a Champion Coach
Dwan Hurt coached his old high school, the Serra Cavaliers, for 28 seasons. He led them to many victories and became one of the most successful coaches in the state.
In 1993, he guided Serra to win the State Division IV title. This was a big achievement for the team.
Later, in 2010, he led the Serra Cavaliers to another major win. They became the California Interscholastic Federation Division III Boys Basketball State Champions. Because of his great work, he was named State Coach of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports and Daily Breeze Coach of the Year in 2010.
Under his leadership, the Serra Cavaliers won eight CIF Southern Section titles. They also won two CIF State titles. In late 2013, Coach Hurt won his 500th game, showing just how many teams he had led to victory.
Family Life
Dwan Hurt's brother, Cedric Hurt, was also a basketball coach. Dwan Hurt passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 25, 2016.
