Dwight Henry (born in 1962) is an American actor, a baker, and a businessman. He is most famous for playing Wink, Hushpuppy's dad, in the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012). Dwight Henry also started the Buttermilk Drop Bakery in New Orleans.
Life and Career
Dwight Henry was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, when he was a young child. He lived there his whole life. He opened Henry's Bakery and Deli near his home in the old Tremé neighborhood. His bakery was doing very well. Dwight Henry even planned to open a second store.
But then, Hurricane Katrina hit. This big storm changed his plans.
Becoming an Actor
Dwight Henry had no acting lessons or experience. Yet, the people making the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild chose him for a role. They let him keep running his bakery while they filmed the movie.
Dwight Henry received great reviews for his acting. The movie was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Still, he says his main job is managing his bakery. It is now called the Buttermilk Drop Bakery. He plans to open another bakery in Harlem soon.
He kept acting after his first movie. He appeared in Steve McQueen's film 12 Years a Slave (2013).
