Dwight Henry, born in 1962, is an American actor, baker, and businessman. He is most famous for playing Wink, Hushpuppy's father, in the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012). Mr. Henry also started the Buttermilk Drop Bakery in New Orleans.

Dwight Henry's Early Life and Career

Dwight Henry was born in Nashville, Tennessee. When he was a young child, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. He lived there for many years and started his own business, Henry's Bakery and Deli. This bakery was located near his home in the old Tremé neighborhood.

His bakery was very successful. Mr. Henry even planned to open a second store. However, Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, which changed his plans.

How Dwight Henry Became an Actor

Even though Dwight Henry had never acted professionally, the people making the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild chose him for a role. They even let him keep running his bakery while they were filming!

Mr. Henry received great reviews for his acting in the movie. Beasts of the Southern Wild was even nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Despite his acting success, Mr. Henry always says that his main job is managing his bakery. His bakery is now called the Buttermilk Drop Bakery. He also opened a second bakery in Harlem, New York.

He continued his acting career after Beasts of the Southern Wild. He appeared in the movie 12 Years a Slave (2013), directed by Steve McQueen.
