Dwight Oliver Wendell Holmes (born November 18, 1877 – died September 7, 1963) was an important American leader. He was a sociologist, which means he studied how people live in groups. He also worked for civil rights, helping everyone have fair treatment. He was a great athlete and an author. From 1937 to 1948, he was the fifth President of Morgan State College.
Early Life and Education
Dwight Holmes was born in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He grew up in different cities like Annapolis, Maryland, New York City, and Staunton, Virginia. His father, Reverend John A. Holmes, was a pastor. He worked at the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church in Washington, D.C. for nearly 20 years.
College Years and Sports
Holmes went to Howard University for his college studies. He was a talented athlete there. He played quarterback and was captain of both the football and baseball teams. He also helped start the first tennis team at Howard. Besides sports, he was part of the debate and glee clubs. In 1901, he earned his bachelor's degree. He was the top student in his graduating class.
After Howard, Holmes continued his education at Columbia University. He earned both his master's degree and his Ph.D. there.
Contributions and Legacy
In 1934, Dwight Holmes wrote an important book. It was called The Evolution of the Negro College. This book talked about how "Negro Colleges" grew. Today, we call these schools HBCUs. His book also discussed the support these schools should offer. This was especially for African Americans living in the Southern United States after the American Civil War.
Holmes passed away on September 7, 1963, when he was 85 years old.
