Dwight's Baseball Journey
Starting with the Blue Jays
Dwight Smith Jr. went to McIntosh High School. The Toronto Blue Jays picked him in the first round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft. This was a big step for his career.
He started playing professional baseball in 2012. He played for two minor league teams, the Rookie Bluefield Blue Jays and the Low-A Vancouver Canadians. In 2013, he played for the Class-A Lansing Lugnuts. He hit well, with a .284 batting average and 25 stolen bases.
Moving Up in the Minors
In 2014, Dwight moved up to the High-A Dunedin Blue Jays. He had a great game on April 6, 2014, hitting two home runs. Later that year, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the Dunedin team. He finished the 2014 season with 12 home runs and 60 runs batted in (RBI).
He then joined the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2015. He played the whole season there, hitting .265. In 2016, he continued with the Fisher Cats and had his best year yet, hitting 15 home runs and 74 RBI.
Making it to MLB
Dwight was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays on May 18, 2017. This was his first time playing in Major League Baseball. He made his debut against the Atlanta Braves. A few days later, he got his first MLB hit against the Milwaukee Brewers.
He played for the Blue Jays until March 2019. At that time, he was traded to a new team.
Playing for the Orioles
On March 9, 2019, Dwight Smith Jr. joined the Baltimore Orioles. He started the season as their left fielder. On May 31, he hit his first career grand slam. This is a special type of home run that scores four runs at once.
His 2019 season was cut short because of an injury. He played in 101 games, hitting 13 home runs and 53 RBI. In 2020, he played in 21 games for the Orioles. He became a free agent in November 2020.
Journey Through Other Teams
After leaving the Orioles, Dwight continued his baseball career.
- In December 2020, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization. He played for their Triple-A team, the Louisville Bats, in 2021.
- In July 2021, he joined the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League. He played well, hitting 5 home runs in 22 games.
- He signed with the Chicago White Sox in February 2022 but was released a few months later.
- He returned to the Acereros de Monclova briefly in May 2022.
- In June 2022, he played for the Lexington Legends in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
- In April 2023, he signed with the Charleston Dirty Birds, also in the Atlantic League. He had a fantastic season, hitting 22 home runs and stealing 24 bases. He was even named an Atlantic League All-Star!
Current Team: Charros de Jalisco
As of February 2024, Dwight Smith Jr. plays for the Charros de Jalisco in the Mexican League. He has continued to play well, showing his skills as an outfielder and hitter.
