Dwyer is a small, unincorporated community located in Grant County, New Mexico. An unincorporated community is a settlement that isn't officially part of a city or town government. You can find Dwyer southeast of Silver City, right next to the Mimbres River and along NM 61.
The Story of Dwyer
This community was first known as San Jose, named after its church. It had its own post office from 1895 until 1917.
Later, the post office from a nearby place called Faywood was moved to Dwyer. Even though it moved, it kept the name Faywood Post Office. The community itself was renamed Dwyer in honor of G.W. Dwyer, who was a homesteader there in 1883. A homesteader was someone who settled on and farmed land given by the government.

- G. X. McSherry was a notable person connected to Dwyer. He was a farmer and rancher. He also served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, which is part of the state's government that makes laws.
