The E.A. Shaw House is an old and important building located in Davenport, Iowa. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's recognized as a special place worth protecting.

Who Was E.A. Shaw?

E.A. Shaw was a businessman who worked with a lumber company called Renwick, Shaw & Crossett. He also owned a lot of forest land, especially in Minnesota. Shaw had this house built for his family around 1901.

What Style is the E.A. Shaw House?

The E.A. Shaw House was designed by a local architect named Gustav Hanssen. He designed it in the Queen Anne style. This style was very popular during the Victorian era.

Queen Anne Style Features

The Queen Anne style is known for being unique and not perfectly balanced. This house shows many features of this style, including:

  • Different shapes and sizes of windows
  • Towers or turrets
  • Wrap-around porches

The house also mixes in some Neoclassical details. This means it has elements inspired by ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

Special Details of the House

The E.A. Shaw House sits on a corner lot at the top of a long hill. This location, along with its corner tower, makes the house stand out. It is built from wood and sits on a strong stone base.

The outside walls are covered with very narrow wooden boards called clapboarding. The porch wraps around the house and has pairs of columns. These columns are in the Doric order, which is a simple, classic style.

The round corner tower has more columns on its third level. These are in the Ionic order, which means they have scroll-like decorations at the top. You can also see a decorative pattern called "egg-and-dart" molding under the roof's edge.

A special window called a Palladian window is on the south side of the house. This type of window has three parts: a tall arched center and two shorter rectangular sides. There is also a covered driveway, called a porte-cochere, on one side of the house.
