Edward Peter Raynes was born on July 4, 1945. He is a very important scientist. He is a professor at the University of Oxford. Professor Raynes is known for his work with liquid crystal displays (LCDs). These are the screens you see on many devices.

He went to St Peter's School, York. He also studied at the University of Cambridge. After his studies, he worked at a research center in Malvern for 21 years. Since 1992, he has been the chief scientist for Sharp Corporation Laboratories in Europe. He is also a Fellow at St Cross College, Oxford.

Liquid crystal displays, or LCDs, are flat screens. They use tiny liquid crystals to make images. These crystals can change how light passes through them. This allows them to create the pictures you see.
