The E231 series (E231系, E231-kei) is a type of electric train used in Japan. These trains are called electric multiple units (EMUs) because they are made of several cars that can move together. They have been used for daily travel and longer trips by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) since the year 2000.

Different Types of E231 Trains

The E231 series has many different versions. Each version is designed for specific train lines or types of service.

E231-0 Series: The Original Workhorse

  • LineColor ChuoSobu.svg / LineColor JobanRapid.svg / LineColor Musashino.svg This version comes in 8-car, 10-car, and 10+5-car sets.
  • You can find them on lines like the Chūō–Sōbu Line, Jōban Line, Narita Line, Musashino Line, and Keiyō Line.

E231-500 Series: For City Commutes

  • LineColor ChuoSobu.svg These are 10-car sets.
  • They are used on the busy Chūō–Sōbu Line.

E231-800 Series: Connecting Lines

  • LineColor ChuoSobuTozai.svg These 10-car sets are special.
  • They run on the Chūō–Sōbu Line and also go onto the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line. This is called "interrunning" when trains from one company run on another company's tracks.

E231-900 Series: Early Models

  • LineColor Musashino.svg This is an 8-car set.
  • It is used on the Musashino Line and Keiyō Line.

E231-1000 Series: For Longer Journeys

  • LineColor TokaidoNew.svg These are 10+5-car sets designed for suburban routes.
  • They operate on the Tōkaidō Main Line, Utsunomiya Line, and Takasaki Line.
  • They also run through services on the Ueno–Tokyo Line and Shōnan–Shinjuku Line.

E231-3000 Series: Converted for Local Lines

  • LineColor Hachiko.svg These are 4-car sets.
  • They were changed from older E231-0 series trains.
  • They now run on the Kawagoe Line and Hachikō Line.

Past Train Operations

Some E231 series trains used to run on different lines but have since been replaced by newer models.

E231-500 Series: Yamanote Line History

  • LineColor Yamanote.svg These 11-car sets were famous on the Yamanote Line.
  • They ran from April 21, 2002, until January 20, 2020. They were replaced by the newer E235 series trains.

E231-900 Series: Chūō–Sōbu Line History

  • LineColor ChuoSobu.svg This 10-car set was used on the Chūō–Sōbu Line.
  • It ran from December 1998 until February 25, 2020. For a while, it was known as the 209-950 series.
