E Township, Maine facts for kids
E is a special kind of community located in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. It's not like a regular town with its own local government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated" area, which means the state of Maine helps manage things there.
E is part of the Central Aroostook Unorganized Territory. It shares borders with the towns of Blaine to its east and Westfield to its north.
What is E?
E is known as an "unincorporated township." This means that unlike most towns, it doesn't have its own local government, like a town council or mayor. Instead, the county or state government handles services like roads, police, and other important things for the people living there.
A Look at Its History
Before 1990, E was organized as a "plantation." A plantation in Maine is a small community that has some local government, but not as much as a full town. In 1990, E Plantation had 64 residents.
Why Disorganize?
In 1990, the people living in E Plantation made a big decision. They voted to "disorganize" their community. This meant they gave up their local government and let the state take over. The main reason for this change was to reduce their taxes. By becoming an unincorporated area, they no longer had to pay for local government services, which could save them money.
Schooling in E
Even though E is an unincorporated area, students living there still go to school. Their K–12 education is provided by Maine School Administrative District 42. This school district also serves the nearby towns of Blaine and Mars Hill.
How Students Go to School
Because E Plantation decided to leave the school district when it disorganized, its students are "tuitioned." This means that the state or the community of E pays money to School Administrative District 42 for each student to attend school there. It's like paying a fee for their education in another district.
