Eagle Island Camp, also called Camp Eagle Island, is a fun youth summer camp. It is located on Eagle Island in Upper Saranac Lake, which is in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. This special place used to be a Girl Scout camp.
Eagle Island Camp is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.
A Special Summer Home
The buildings at Eagle Island Camp were first built in 1903. They were designed as a summer getaway for a very important person named Levi Morton. He was once the Governor of New York and even the Vice President of the United States!
A famous architect named William L. Coulter designed these buildings. The camp is a great example of "Adirondack Rustic" style. This style uses natural materials like wood and stone.
Becoming a Historic Landmark
In 1987, Camp Eagle Island was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to American history. Later, in 2004, it was named a National Historic Landmark. This is an even higher honor for historic places.
The Girl Scout Years
Eagle Island Camp became a Girl Scout property in 1938. The Graves family, from New Jersey, gave the island to the Girl Scout Council. For many years, it was a popular overnight camp for Girl Scouts.
The last group to own and run the camp was the Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey. They operated the camp until the summer of 2008.
A New Beginning
On November 6, 2015, a group called The Friends of Eagle Island, Inc. bought the camp. This group is now known as Eagle Island, Inc. They continue to operate the property as a youth camp.
The property includes Eagle Island itself, two smaller islands, and a mainland area. It's a wonderful place for young people to enjoy the outdoors and learn.
