The Eagle Mountain House is a special old hotel located in Jackson, New Hampshire. It was built in 1916 and made bigger in 1929. This hotel is one of the few large, old mountain hotels still standing in the beautiful White Mountains region of New Hampshire. Because of its history and importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
About the Hotel
The Eagle Mountain House is found on the west side of Carter Notch Road, just north of Jackson Village. It sits on the side of a valley, with Eagle Mountain behind it. Across the valley to the east, you can see Black Mountain.
The hotel is a big building made of wood, with 3 and a half stories. It has a U-shape, with the main part facing the road. The roof has many windows that stick out, called dormers. Some of the windows on the upper floors still have their original diamond-shaped glass panes.
A long porch, about 220 feet (67 meters) long, runs along the front of the hotel. On one side, where the ground slopes down, the porch becomes two stories tall. Inside the hotel, many of the public rooms still look like they did a long time ago. There's even an old elevator from 1926 that still works!
A Place for Artists and Tourists
By the 1840s, the town of Jackson became known as a place where artists liked to visit. They came to paint the amazing mountains and scenery. More and more people started visiting the area when a railroad arrived nearby in Glen in the 1850s.
By the 1880s, Jackson had five big hotels, and the Eagle Mountain House was one of them. It was started in 1849 by Cyrus and Marcia Pinkham Gale. They built it on land that Marcia's family, the Pinkhams, had lived on for a long time.
At first, the Eagle Mountain House was just a farmhouse. But it grew over time to hold up to 125 guests. Sadly, the original building was destroyed by a fire in 1915.
Building the New Hotel
The oldest part of the hotel you see today was built in 1916 by Arthur Pinkham Gale, who was the son of Cyrus and Marcia. It is one of only five large resort hotels built in New Hampshire in the late 1800s and early 1900s that are still standing. It's also the only one of those five that was built in Jackson.
In 1929, the hotel was made twice as big with a new addition. It was given the newest features of the time, like steam heating and that working elevator. The Gale family owned and ran the hotel until 1973.
