Earl Glenn Yarbrough Sr. was a leader in education. He served as the president of Savannah State University from 2007 to 2011. He was born in 1946.

His Education Journey
Earl G. Yarbrough Sr. was born in 1946 in Wichita, Kansas. He loved learning and went to several universities.
He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, from Wichita State University in 1969. This degree was in industrial education. Later, he earned a Master of Arts degree in industrial studies from California State University, Los Angeles in 1974. He then completed his education with a Doctorate degree in industrial education from Iowa State University in 1976.
Starting His Career
Dr. Yarbrough began his career in education in 1976 at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He then moved to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1984. There, he became the head of the Industrial Technology Program.
In 1986, he helped start the School of Technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. He was the founding dean there until 1998.
Working at Virginia State University
From 1998 to 2003, Dr. Yarbrough worked at Virginia State University. He was a full professor and also a vice president. He helped manage both academic and student affairs at the university.
Becoming a University President
In 2006, Dr. Yarbrough was chosen to be the president of Knoxville College. However, he later took on a different role.
On May 30, 2007, he became the President of Savannah State University. He led the university until April 19, 2011. At that time, the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia decided not to renew his contract.
Awards and Special Recognitions
Dr. Yarbrough received many awards and honors for his work in education. Some of these include:
- The Dr. Alvin Rudisill Exemplary Service Award in 1995. This was given by the National Association of Industrial Technology.
- Being chosen as a Kellogg Leadership Fellow in 2003. He was one of only 13 faculty members selected from historically Black colleges and universities.
- The Region 3 Outstanding Industrial Technology Professor Award in 2004. This award also came from the National Association of Industrial Technology.
- Becoming a member of the Telfair Museum of Art board of trustees in December 2007.
His Writings
Dr. Yarbrough also wrote about his field. Some of his published works include:
- "A Contemporary Role for Industrial Arts" in the Journal of Epsilon Pi Tau in 1977.
- His doctoral thesis from 1976, which was about how white students viewed Black instructors in mostly white colleges.
His Family Life
Dr. Yarbrough is married to Patricia Yarbrough. They have four children: Kim, Angela, Delmar, and Earl Jr.
