The Earl Stein House is a special family home found at 209 Revere Street in Midland, Michigan. It became a recognized historic place in 1989, meaning it's important to American history. This house is super cool because it was the very first home designed as part of the Taliesin Fellowship program. This program was started in 1933 by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Building a Special Home

In early 1933, a man named Earl Stein wanted a new house. He asked an architect named Alden B. Dow to design it. Dow drew some first ideas for the house.

He then took these drawings with him to start a special learning program. This program was called the Taliesin Fellowship. It was led by the very famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

While working with Wright, Dow changed and improved his house design many times. He finished the final design later in 1933. Building the house started in October of that year. The Earl Stein House was fully finished in 1934. Later, in the 1970s, more bedrooms were added to the house. These additions were also planned by Alden B. Dow himself.

What Does It Look Like?

The Earl Stein House is a low, brick home. It is built in a style called Prairie School. This style often features low, horizontal lines. The house has an L-shaped floor plan, meaning it looks like the letter "L" from above.

The roof is low and gently sloped, covered with copper. A very large chimney stands out on the roof. A long, narrow covered walkway, called a loggia, leads to the main entrance. This walkway is found between the two parts of the "L" shape. The house also has an upper floor. Below that, there is a basement that opens up into the backyard.
