What is an Earl?
An Earl is a high-ranking noble title in the British system. It's one step below a Marquess and above a Viscount. People with these titles are part of the "peerage," which is a group of people with special hereditary ranks.
History of the Title
The title of Earl of Dumbarton has been created twice in history. Each time, it was given to an important person.
First Creation: 1675
The first time the title was created was on March 9, 1675. This was for a man named Lord George Douglas. He was the son of the Marquess of Douglas. Lord George Douglas was given this title because he served in a war called the Franco-Dutch War.
He was also given another title at the same time: Lord Douglas of Ettrick. Lord George Douglas had one son, also named George. When his son, the second Earl, passed away in 1749 without having any children, both of these titles ended. This is called becoming "extinct."
Second Creation: 2018
The title was created again on July 16, 2018. This time, Queen Elizabeth II gave it to her grandson, Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. This happened when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.
When he received the Earl of Dumbarton title, Prince Harry was also given two other titles: Duke of Sussex and Baron Kilkeel. These are called "subsidiary titles" because they are extra titles given along with the main one.
The person who will inherit the Earl of Dumbarton title after Prince Harry is his son, Prince Archie of Sussex.
