This township got its name from another nearby place called China Township, Michigan. It's common for new places to be named after older, established areas.
Geography and Location
East China Township covers a total area of about 7.8 square miles (20.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, which is about 6.7 square miles (17.3 square kilometers). The rest, about 1.1 square miles (3.0 square kilometers), is water. This means a good part of the township includes rivers or lakes.

- Hawthorne is a small, unincorporated community. This means it's a recognized place, but it doesn't have its own local government separate from the township. Hawthorne is located on Remer Road, near River Road/M-29.
