The East Hancock Neighborhood Historic District is a special part of East Hancock. It is recognized across the country as a historic place. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

History of East Hancock

Long ago, the East Hancock area had many deep ditches called ravines. These ravines were first covered with wooden walkways. Later, a company called Dakota Heights Land Company filled them in. Then, the land was divided into smaller pieces for building homes.

Building in the neighborhood started in the 1890s. It grew a lot in the early 1900s. This was a time when many people in Hancock became wealthy. The neighborhood became a home for people involved in business and mining. Important early residents were often mine workers and managers. As mining became less important, more business people moved into the area.

What East Hancock Looks Like

Many homes in East Hancock were designed by famous local architects. You can see different building styles there. Some common styles include Queen Anne, Stick, Shingle, Neo-Classical, Renaissance Revival, and Bungalow.

One special feature is a stone staircase built by the WPA. It goes down from Cooper Avenue to Front Street. The WPA was a government program that created jobs during the Great Depression.

Historically, East Hancock was important for another reason. It was the starting point for the trolley that went to the Electric Park resort.

The East Hancock Neighborhood Association was started in 1981. This group helps take care of the neighborhood. The area is known for its many large houses. These homes often show the Queen Anne, Renaissance, and shingle styles.
