The East Javan langur (Trachypithecus auratus) is a type of monkey found in Indonesia. It's also known as the ebony lutung or Javan lutung. Most of these monkeys are shiny black. They might have a brownish color on their legs, sides, and near their ears. You can find them on the island of Java and other nearby islands in Indonesia. Its scientific name, auratus, comes from a Latin word meaning "golden." This is because some of these monkeys have a rare golden color.

What Does the East Javan Langur Look Like?

Like other langurs, the East Javan langur has a very long tail. Its tail can be up to 98 cm long, which is much longer than its body, which is about 55 cm.

Most adult males and females are glossy black. Females sometimes have a light, yellowish-white patch near their belly. Baby East Javan langurs are born with bright orange fur! This bright color helps adult females notice and protect them.

There's a special type of East Javan langur that keeps some of its golden color even when it grows up. Its fur might darken a bit, but it will still have yellow hints on its sides, legs, and around its ears.

Where Do East Javan Langurs Live?

The East Javan langur lives in rainforests. They can be found both deep inside the forest and on its edges.

These monkeys are active during the day, which means they are diurnal. They also spend most of their time in trees, making them arboreal animals.

What Do East Javan Langurs Eat?

East Javan langurs are mostly plant-eaters, which means they are herbivorous. Their main foods are leaves, fruits, flowers, and flower buds. Sometimes, they also eat insect larvae.

Like other monkeys in their group, they have a special stomach. This stomach helps them digest plant material more easily. They also have large salivary glands to help break down their food.

How Do East Javan Langurs Behave?

East Javan langurs are very social creatures. They live in groups, usually with about seven monkeys. Each group typically has one or two adult males.

Adult female langurs are very protective of their group. They will even help look after babies that are not their own. However, they can be aggressive towards females from other groups.

These monkeys do not have a specific mating season. Females usually give birth to one baby at a time.
