East Memphis is a large area located in Memphis, Tennessee. It includes many different neighborhoods and communities. Some of these are Colonial Acres, White Station, Sherwood Forest, and High Point Terrace. The exact borders of East Memphis are not super strict.

  • On the West: Highland Street.
  • On the South: I-240
  • On the East: The traditional eastern border was inside the I-240 loop. However, many people now think it reaches the Germantown city limits and the Cordova area.
  • On the North: Sam Cooper Blvd.

The main zip codes for this area are 38111, 38117, and 38157. This also includes 38120 and 38119. Back in 1950, the eastern edge of Memphis was where East Memphis is today. By the mid-1960s, most of East Memphis inside the I-240 loop had become part of the city.

Discovering East Memphis

East Memphis is a very busy area with lots of homes and businesses. Poplar Avenue is the main road that runs east to west through the area. Many successful businesses are located on or near this road. East Memphis is also home to some of the biggest houses in Memphis. You can find them especially in the Walnut Grove area.

The tall Clark Tower is also in East Memphis. There are no rules about how tall buildings can be outside of downtown Memphis. This area has also become a popular spot for many companies and law offices. Walnut Grove Road has many churches and schools. Poplar Plaza Shopping Center is a large shopping area. It is located at Poplar and Highland Street. This spot could be seen as the start of the East Memphis business district.

Highland Street has many businesses. It also has some tall apartment buildings. Crichton College is located here too. The University of Memphis is south of Central Avenue. It is also north of Southern Avenue. The Highland strip is on its western side. Further east on Poplar Avenue, you will find the Laurelwood Shopping Center and Oak Court Mall.

East Memphis also includes areas outside the I-240 Loop. These include homes around Quince Road and Kirby Parkway. The River Oaks neighborhood is also in this part. A big business area has grown around Poplar and Ridgeway Road. This area includes the Hilton Memphis. It is the largest hotel in the city. The eastern edge of the neighborhood is the Germantown city limits at Kirby Parkway.

The main places to shop in East Memphis are Eastgate Shopping Center and Poplar Plaza. Other popular spots include Oak Court Mall and Laurelwood Collection. You can also find Regalia and Park Place Center here.

The area also has many Jewish places of worship. These include Baron Hirsch Synagogue and Anshei Sphard Beth El Emeth Congregation. You can also find Young Israel of Memphis and Temple Israel.
