The East Mitchell Street Historic District is a special neighborhood in Petoskey, Michigan. It's a place where many old homes and buildings have been kept safe and sound. This area is generally found between Rose, Kalamazoo, State, Howard, Michigan, and Division streets. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, which means it's recognized as an important historical site.

What Makes This District Special?

The East Mitchell Street Historic District covers 31 city blocks. It has 294 homes, and 278 of them are considered important to the district's history. Most of these houses are made of wood and are about one-and-a-half to two-and-a-half stories tall.

Architectural Styles You'll See

You can find many different building styles here. Some popular ones include Victorian, Queen Anne, Shingle style, and Colonial Revival. You'll also see Bungalow homes and other designs from the late 1800s through the 1930s.

The neighborhood also has four churches and two schools. These buildings add to the district's unique look.

Exploring the Neighborhood

The main part of the neighborhood is along East Mitchell Street. Here, the houses are usually bigger and have more fancy details. East Mitchell Street goes downhill towards the center of Petoskey. The historic district spreads out on streets both north and south of East Mitchell.

The area is full of shade trees and has small front lawns. Sometimes, these lawns are held up by low walls. Even though some houses have been changed over time, like porches being closed in, the district still looks very much like it did in the past. This is because many important design parts have been kept.

Important Buildings in the District

Here are some of the special buildings you can find:

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church (1020 Mitchell): This church was built in 1958. It shows a style called Gothic Revival from after World War II. Its nearby parish house was built in 1938.
  • First Presbyterian Church (461 Mitchell): Built in 1899, this church first combined Gothic Revival and Queen Anne styles. It was updated in 1952 with a Colonial Revival design.
  • Temple B'nai Israel (501 Michigan): This building was first built in 1881 by another church group. It was moved to this spot in 1910. It's a Victorian Gothic Revival building.
  • Parr Memorial Baptist Church (502 Michigan): This church was built in 1910. It also shows an early 20th-century Gothic Revival style.
  • St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and School (500 block of Howard): This church group started here in 1879. The complex has four buildings: a large brick Gothic Revival church (1903-08), a two-story Gothic Revival monastery (1903), a two-story Spanish Mission Style school (1927), and a two-story brick rectory (a home for a priest).
  • Old Petoskey Senior High and Central Elementary School (600 block of Howard): The old high school building is a two-story brick building from 1913. It has a Classical Revival design. The Central School part, built in 1929, is an Art Deco style building.

History of the District

The East Mitchell Street Historic District grew as the town of Petoskey grew. It has been a home for many different kinds of people over the years. This includes important business owners and everyday workers. Many of the houses seem to have been built using popular, ready-to-use building plans from that time.

The oldest building in the neighborhood, at 519 Kalamazoo Street, dates back to 1877. The first homes built here were mostly Victorian and Queen Anne styles. As the 1900s began, more Colonial Revival houses were built. Bungalow homes also became very popular in the area. Later in the 20th century, a few homes were built in the Prairie and International styles.
