East Pakistan Rifles facts for kids
After British India was divided into new countries, a group called the 'Eastern Frontier Rifles' was reorganized. It was renamed the East Pakistan Rifles. This group became the main force protecting the borders of the area known as East Pakistan.
Many police officers from Calcutta and about 1,000 former soldiers from West Pakistan joined this new force. Army officers were brought in to lead and organize the East Pakistan Rifles (EPR). In 1958, besides guarding the borders, they were also given the job of stopping smuggling. During the 1965 war between India and Pakistan, this force fought bravely. They had successful battles in places like Lathitila, Dohogram, Laksmipur, Assalong, and Boroibari. Major Tofael received the highest military award of that time, the 'Nishan-e-Haider'. He earned this award for his brave actions in the Laksmipur Operation. By March 1971, the force had 13,454 members.
