East Red Wing actually started out as its own small town. In 1857, it officially became a village. This meant it had its own local government and rules.
However, this didn't last very long. Soon after it became a village, the state decided to change things. The village's special permission to be its own town, called a charter, was taken away.
On March 19, 1857, East Red Wing officially joined with the city of Red Wing. From that day on, it became a neighborhood of the larger city.
