The East River is a 38.3-mile-long (61.6 km) stream located in the beautiful central part of Colorado. It starts high up in the mountains and flows south, eventually joining another river to form a bigger one.

About the East River

The East River is an important natural feature in Colorado. It helps create larger river systems that are vital for the environment and people. This river is known for its clear, cold water and the stunning mountain scenery it flows through.

Where the River Flows

The East River begins its journey at Emerald Lake. This lake is nestled within the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, a protected area known for its amazing peaks and forests. From there, the river travels through Gunnison County. It passes by small towns and through valleys surrounded by tall mountains.

Journey to the Gunnison

As the East River flows south, it collects water from smaller streams and melting snow. Its journey ends when it meets the Taylor River. When these two rivers join, they form the much larger Gunnison River. The Gunnison River then continues its path, eventually flowing into the mighty Colorado River. This makes the East River a small but important part of a huge river network in the western United States.
