Nature and Geography
East Sharpsburg sits in a valley called Morrisons Cove. It is at the southern base of Loop Mountain. A stream named Plum Creek flows through the community. This creek then flows northwest and meets Halter Creek at a place called McKee Gap.
At McKee Gap, Plum Creek and Halter Creek create a "water gap." This is a natural opening where the creeks cut through Dunning Mountain and Short Mountain. This gap allows the water to flow out of Morrisons Cove. Halter Creek continues its journey to the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata River. The Juniata River is part of the much larger Susquehanna River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or body of water.
