The East Street drill hall is an old building in Bromley that used to be a place for soldiers to train. It's no longer used by the military today.
History
A drill hall is a building where soldiers practice and train. This building was first a place for music shows. It was finished in 1872.
Later, it became a drill hall for a group called the 18th Kent Rifle Volunteers. This group changed its name over the years. In 1883, it became part of the Queen's Own West Kent Regiment. In 1908, it was known as the 5th Battalion of that same regiment.
In August 1914, the soldiers gathered at the drill hall. They were getting ready for war. From there, they went to India.
The drill hall stopped being used by the military in 1947. This happened after the 5th Battalion joined with another group. They formed a new unit at a different location in Tonbridge.
After the military left, the building had new uses. Royal Mail used it as an office to sort letters. Then, in 1997, it was changed into shops.
