East Union is a small, quiet community in Nicholas County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's not a city or town with its own government, but a place where people live together. You can find it along Route 57, just south of Carlisle. Carlisle is the main town in Nicholas County. East Union sits about 853 feet (260 meters) above sea level.

History of East Union

East Union was first settled around the year 1800. Its name might come from its location. It is east of where two creeks, Somerset and Hinkston, join together.

Early Days

This community was once known as Bramlett. It even had its own post office. At one time, a doctor named Dr. Buntin lived and worked there. He graduated from the Louisville School of Medicine in 1890.

Important Buildings

The only church in East Union is the East Union Christian Church. This church is very old. It is the second-oldest active Christian church in the United States. Long ago, there was also a grist mill. This mill was located along Somerset Creek, below the settlement. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.

Cemetery and Notable People

The local cemetery in East Union holds a lot of history. Soldiers from both the North and the South, who fought in the American Civil War, are buried there. One important person buried in the cemetery is Peter Hon (1791–1876). He was a well-known evangelist. An evangelist is someone who travels and preaches about Christianity. Peter Hon was famous among Christian churches. During his life, he baptized about 5,000 people.
