Eastern precinct, Somerset County, New Jersey facts for kids
The Eastern precinct was an old administrative area, like a district, in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. It existed for about 50 years, from around 1745 until 1798.
History of the Eastern Precinct
The Eastern precinct was created around 1745. At that time, New Jersey was still under British rule. The British government divided Somerset County into three main areas to help manage things. These areas were the Eastern precinct, the Northern precinct, and the Western precinct. These divisions helped organize the land and its people.
On February 21, 1798, the Eastern precinct stopped existing. Its land was used to form a new area called Franklin Township. Franklin Township was one of the very first townships created in New Jersey. When Franklin Township was officially formed, the Eastern precinct was dissolved, meaning it was no longer a separate administrative area.
