What Was the Western Precinct?

The Western precinct was one of three main parts of Somerset County. The other two were the Eastern precinct and the Northern precinct. These areas were set up to help manage the county when New Jersey was still under British rule. They were like administrative divisions, helping the government organize things.

How Did It Change Over Time?

The Western precinct didn't stay the same size.

Forming Hillsborough Township

On September 12, 1771, a part of the Western precinct was taken to create a new area called Hillsborough Township. This was a common way for new towns or areas to be formed back then.

Becoming Montgomery Township

The Western precinct officially ended on February 21, 1798. On this date, the remaining parts of the precinct were used to form Montgomery Township. Montgomery Township was one of the first 104 townships created in New Jersey. Once Montgomery Township was formed, the Western precinct was no longer needed and was dissolved.
