A Special Subspecies

There's a special type of this snake, called Trimerodytes percarinatus suriki. It lives only in Taiwan and can be found all over the island. When an animal or plant lives only in one specific place, it is called endemic.

What Does It Look Like?

The eastern water snake is a medium-sized snake. It usually grows to be about 70 to 90 centimeters (27 to 35 inches) long. Some can even reach up to 110 centimeters (43 inches)!

If you try to catch this snake, it will likely bite you. However, it is important to know that this snake is not venomous. This means its bite is not dangerous.

Female eastern water snakes lay eggs. They usually lay between 4 and 13 eggs at a time. Sometimes, a female snake can lay as many as 25 eggs!

Where Does It Live?

The eastern water snake lives in many parts of Asia. You can find it in places like northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and southern China. It also lives in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

This snake loves to be near water. It is an aquatic species, which means it lives in or around water. It is often found in hilly areas where there are streams or ponds.

What Does It Eat?

The eastern water snake is a hunter. It enjoys eating different kinds of small animals that live in or near water. Its favorite foods include shrimp, frogs (even baby frogs called tadpoles), and fish.
