Ebenezer is a small, quiet place in Camp County, Texas, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In 2000, about 55 people lived there.

A Look Back: Ebenezer's History

Ebenezer was started in the 1850s. Three settlers from Georgia named Israel Braden Rape, Robert Devenport, and Thomas DeLaney founded the community.

Israel Braden Rape also started a church and a cemetery in Ebenezer. For most of its history, Ebenezer was a farming community. It never had many businesses, just mills and places to process cotton.

The number of people living in Ebenezer has stayed fairly small. In 1968, there were 60 residents. From 1983 to 2000, the population was 55 people. In 1983, the community had two churches and a cemetery. People living in Ebenezer would go to the nearby city of Pittsburg to buy groceries and other things they needed.

Where is Ebenezer?

Learning in Ebenezer: Schools and Students

Education was important in Ebenezer from early on. Israel Braden Rape, one of the founders, started a school called Rape's Academy. This was the first school district for the town.

In 1897, the school had 49 students. It was a one-room school building with just one teacher. By 1935, the community had transportation to help children get to school. Students from other areas also started coming to Ebenezer's school.

At that time, there were 180 White students and six teachers. They taught ten different grade levels. Another school was located about two miles southwest of Ebenezer. This school had 107 Black students and five teachers.

In 1955, the schools in Ebenezer closed down. After that, students from Ebenezer became part of the Pittsburg Independent School District.
