What is the Ebenezer Knowlton House Like?
The Knowlton House is in a quiet, country area of Montville, Maine. It sits on the northwest side of Choate Road. The house is a one-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides and a chimney in the middle. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding, which are long, thin boards. The house sits on a stone foundation.
The front of the house faces southeast and looks very balanced. It has five sections, with the main door in the middle. The door has a simple frame around it. Above the door, there's a small window with four glass panes. A part of the house, called an ell, sticks out to the right. One barn is connected to this ell. Another barn stands across Choate Road.
Inside the Knowlton House
The inside of the house has a common layout for its time. There's a narrow hallway right when you walk in. To the left, you'll find a living room, called a parlor. To the right, there's the original kitchen. The fireplace in the parlor has beautiful woodwork. This woodwork shows the fancy style of the Federal period. At the back of the house, there are three smaller rooms. Stairs lead up to an attic area that was partly finished.
Who Was Ebenezer Knowlton?
Rev. Ebenezer Knowlton, Sr., was from Pittsfield, New Hampshire. He moved to Montville in 1827. This was where his wife's family lived. The house was likely built around 1827 or 1828. However, some clues suggest it might have been built in parts, possibly starting earlier. This is because Knowlton, who was a traveling minister, visited the area as early as 1812.
Ebenezer Knowlton, Jr.
Ebenezer Knowlton, Jr., was 13 years old in 1827. He followed his father and became a minister too. He also served one term in the Maine State Legislature, which is like the state's government. But he is best known for being a trustee for Bates College and Colby College. A trustee helps manage and guide a college.
The younger Ebenezer sold the house to his brother John around 1855. The house stayed in the Knowlton family until 1895.
