Early Life and Moving to America
Eberhard Anheuser grew up in a town called Kreuznach. This town is in Germany. His family had owned a vineyard there since 1627. A vineyard is a farm where grapes are grown, often for making wine. In 1842, Eberhard and two of his brothers decided to move to North America. They were looking for new opportunities.
Taking Over a Brewery
In 1853, a company called Bavarian Brewery Company started. It was a brewery, which is a place that makes beer. This company was having a hard time. Eberhard Anheuser had loaned money to them. He was one of their main creditors, meaning someone they owed money to.
From Creditor to Owner
By 1860, the brewery was in serious financial trouble. Eberhard decided to buy out the other people the company owed money to. This meant he took over the entire company. He became the new owner.
A New Name for the Company
After taking charge, Eberhard Anheuser became the president and CEO. He changed the company's name. It became "Eberhard Anheuser and Company."
Family and Business Growth
In 1861, something special happened in Eberhard's family. His daughter, Lilly, got married to Adolphus Busch. Adolphus was a salesman who sold supplies to breweries. Lilly's older sister, Anna, also got married that day to Adolphus's brother, Ulrich Busch. It was a double wedding!
Staying Strong During Difficult Times
The American Civil War started around this time. Even with the war going on, the brewery did well. One reason for its success was that lager beer was not banned by the Union Army. However, stronger alcoholic drinks were not allowed. This helped the brewery stay competitive.
Anheuser-Busch is Born
As Eberhard Anheuser got older, Adolphus Busch took on more and more responsibilities. Adolphus was very good at business. In 1879, the company was renamed again. This time, it became "Anheuser-Busch." This name honored both Eberhard Anheuser and his son-in-law, Adolphus Busch.
Later Life and Legacy
Eberhard Anheuser passed away in 1880. He was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. His grave is near where Adolphus Busch was later buried. Eberhard Anheuser's vision and hard work helped lay the foundation for one of the world's largest brewing companies.
