Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ebisu (恵比須, 恵比寿, 夷, 戎), also known as Yebisu or Hiruko (蛭子) or Kotoshiro-nushi-no-kami (事代主神), is a Japanese god. He is known as the god of fishermen, good luck, and working people. Ebisu also protects the health of children. He is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, a group of important gods in Japan who bring good fortune.

Who is Ebisu?

Ebisu is a very special god in Japanese stories. He is often seen as a happy, smiling figure, which is why he is sometimes called "The Laughing God." He is usually shown holding a fishing rod and a big fish, often a sea bass. This shows his connection to fishing and the sea.

Ebisu's Early Life as Hiruko

Ebisu's story begins with his first name, Hiruko, which means "leech child." He was the very first child of the gods Izanagi and Izanami, who are believed to have created the Japanese islands. However, Hiruko was born without strong bones, or in some tales, without arms and legs. This happened because of a mistake made during his parents' marriage ceremony.

Even though he was weak, Hiruko tried very hard to survive. Sadly, he was placed in a boat made of reeds and set adrift on the sea.

Washed Ashore and Becoming a God

After a long journey, Hiruko's boat eventually washed ashore. He was found and cared for by the Ainu people, specifically a person named Ebisu Saburo. With their help, the weak child slowly grew stronger. He overcame many challenges, developed legs, and eventually transformed into the god we know as Ebisu.

Even as a god, Ebisu is often shown as being slightly crippled and deaf. But despite these challenges, he is always joyful and brings happiness to those who believe in him. He is often pictured wearing a tall, traditional Japanese hat called the Kazaori Eboshi (風折烏帽子).

Ebisu in Modern Times

Ebisu is still a popular figure in Japan today. You might even see his name in everyday life! For example, the well-known clothing brand Evisu is named after him. This shows how important and recognized he is in Japanese culture, even in modern times.
