Ecgfrith of Mercia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ecgfrith was the King of Mercia for a short time in 796. He was the son of King Offa and Queen Cynethryth.

In 787, Ecgfrith was crowned king while his father, Offa, was still alive and ruling. This was the first time an English king was crowned in this special way. King Offa likely copied this idea from Charlemagne, a powerful European ruler who had his own sons crowned by the Pope. By doing this, Offa wanted to make sure everyone knew Ecgfrith would be the next king of Mercia. Even though Ecgfrith was crowned, his father Offa kept all the real power.

When King Offa died in July 796, Ecgfrith became the full king. However, he ruled for only 141 days. He died in December of the same year. We don't know exactly how he died, but some people believe his death might not have been from natural causes.

Ecgfrith was followed as king by Coenwulf. Some historians think that King Offa had removed other family members who might have wanted to be king. This was done to clear the way for Ecgfrith to become ruler.

Alcuin of York, a famous English scholar and church leader, wrote about this time:

That most noble young man has not died for his sins, but the vengeance for the blood shed by the father has reached the son. For you know how much blood his father shed to secure the kingdom upon his son.

Alcuin also said that these actions did not make the kingdom stronger, but instead led to its downfall.
